Shower and pools require attention to avoid damage costs and excessive amount on water bills. Remodeling your pipe line structure is preferable, if it would help reduce costs in future.

Causes of water leakage problem at home:

  1. Conditions relating to pH level of water, temperature and oxygen levels are usual suspects. Corrosion and rusting of pipes happens due to these factors.
  2. Improper water velocity and pressure combination is a bad news. Oversized pumps and undersized distribution lines accounts to unsupportable velocity.
  3. Clogging pipes and drains remains the culprit in most cases. Hair, food and toilet papers usually cause clogs to happen.
  4. External roots around plumbing works are pretty common. It happens outside your residential structure, resulting in roots growing towards them.

DIY steps to spot leakages:

Putting your senses to work is the easiest step in finding pipe leakages. Leaky pipes always smell to be notified. Accumulated water can be smelled after you clean your room completely. A staining and buckling floor is an indicator of leakage, which must be addressed promptly. Damaged walls effectively rings bell of leakage like damaged flooring do. Paint and wallpaper would be quick enough to indicate a leak if you examine thoroughly. Mold is another clear indicator of leakages. Molds live in moist areas, understandably that lies beneath the walls.

Tips for fixing water leakages:

  • Once spotted, shut off the pipe through the valve leading to it.
  • Drain till last drop of water in the pipe by turning on the faucet.
  • Dry the pipes quickly. A towel could come handy to wipe out moisture.
  • Cover the exposure of leak with rubber after epoxying it.
  • Allow for rubber to stick hard and use tapes to cover it.
  • In case of larger leak, cut out damaged portion of pipe, that would be replaced thereafter.

Safety precautions prior the event and during the event:

When temperature drops to freezing point or lower, there are chances of unprotected water pipes getting frozen. Allowing trickle of cold and hot water for dripping would save you from costs of damage. Sealing air leaks on doors and windows lessen the chances of cold air penetration. Backflow prevention should be in place to prevent leakages from happening. Providing ample drainage for discharge is must in any building. Clogging pipes can escalate the issue much more than you would imagine.
